Handy tips for working from home

Zuid-Limburg Bereikbaar has been encouraging people to work from home for years. Doing so contributes to better accessibility, reduces time spent in traffic, and is better for the environment. Flexibility also increases the satisfaction and motivation of your employees. The tips we share below will help employees make their way around. As of 13 March, many of us have been working from home. The tips we share below will help employees make their way around.

Structure and regularity

To make the best of your day, we recommend keeping to your normal working rhythm as much as possible. In other words: go to bed on time, set your alarm clock, have breakfast, have a shower, and start your day right!

Plan your work

Working from home may change some or all of work you do. A weekly schedule will ensure that you manage your working hours more efficiently and get more done. Share this schedule with one or more of your colleagues and, if necessary, consult with them to plan when certain work needs to be finished. This will give you a more structured approach and a bigger drive to keep working. If you have a partner and/or children, then coordinate your work with your partner's schedule or your child/children's timetable. A clear schedule can have positive results in every household.

Create your own workspace

If possible, create your own dedicated workspace in your home. This includes a table, a chair with a straight back, and the things your need for your work (such as a laptop). Ideally, this workspace should be in a separate room, but this may not be possible for everyone. Make sure to reduce potential distractions to a minimum. If you do not have the space or you are surrounded by too many distractions, then make sure your colleagues are informed of this.

Working from home

A good internet connection is important, but make sure that you can also access the programmes that you will need to work from home. Such programmes include Skype, Zoom, Dropbox, and Google Drive. Please note: Some of these programmes may not be GDPR compliant, and you should take this into account.

Working hours and breaks

Make sure to keep to your regular working hours and regularly take breaks. Share this information with your colleagues so that they know when you are taking a break. Once you are finished with your work, then relax. If you live with a partner, do something together to take your mind off things and stay sociable.

Exercising

It is important to remember to exercise. Stretch your legs now and again or do some exercises. It's ok to go on a short walk or cycle outside, but make sure you avoid busy areas and always keep at least 1.5 metres distance.

Living with others

Some people live with roommates or their partner. In these times of social isolation, living with someone can be positive – because of the company – as well as a source of unrest and frustration. Make sure that you can alternate between working and private life or, if necessary, divide them into brief time slots. For example, if you have to go shopping, then go alone when possible and make sure that you and your partner or roommate alternate this chore. It is important to accept that we are in a difficult situation and have to make the best of it. Don't lose sight of this when you're confronted with potential sources of frustration, and remember to view the reactions from other people within this context. We are all facing this challenge together, so try to help others where possible in accordance with the guidelines. Please take care of yourself and each other!

Lastly...

It is important to occasionally reflect and think about yourself while also considering what is required to do your job well. Does working from home suit your circumstances? What are your experiences of working from home? Which lessons have you learned that you can apply in the future? Write down these thoughts and discuss them with your colleagues or supervisor when you have the time.
