I want to use a shared car
You share a car with others — only when you need it.
In car sharing, multiple people use the same car, but at different times. This allows the car to be used as efficiently as possible, since cars are on average parked about 90% of the time. For a specific trip, you temporarily use a car that isn’t yours. After that, someone else uses it for their own trip. You can also share your own car (or even a private lease car) with others when you're not using it.
Benefits of Car Sharing
- Car sharing is flexible because you only use the car when you actually need it.
- Car sharing is a conscious choice. With proper planning, you're not dependent on just one mode of travel. You can choose a car that fits your journey — for example, only using a larger car when going on holiday or moving house.
- Car sharing saves money. Owning a car comes with significant fixed and variable costs — depreciation, taxes, insurance, parking permits, parking fees, MOT inspections, repairs, etc. By sharing a car, you save money, especially if you use your own car infrequently or irregularly. For holidays or weekend trips, a regular rental car is often cheaper.
- Car sharing is environmentally and socially friendly. According to the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency, car sharing results in 30% fewer cars and 18% fewer kilometers driven. This means less public space taken up by parked cars, reduced parking pressure, and lower CO2 emissions.
- Car sharing saves time. A shared car has a fixed parking spot. Unlike a private car where you might have to search for a space, this is not an issue with a shared car.
